There are numerous factors that influence and individual’s personality development. The factors lead to the formation of a distinct individual with a unique character. The factors can be of biological, social, cultural, or psychological nature. The following essay describes my personality development and the influence of the above factors. The essay will include related personality development theories to expound on my personal development. Moreover, I will explain my development by using the Erickson’s psychological stages. An analysis will show that the different factors that shape my personality combine to form a gradual process that started at infancy to form my current character.
The factors in this genre are of physiological nature and are of different categories. The first factor is heredity. It occurs through the transmission of genes with specific traits. An example of a trait I gained through heredity is hand clasping. While clasping my hands, I usually place my left thumb on top just like my father. Another biological aspect is my height. Our family mainly consists of relatively short individuals, and I fall in the same category. All my immediate family members are less than six feet tall, thus portraying the influence of inherited biological traits. Another aspect is the nutritional behavior. During my early age, my parents always taught me on the importance of taking fruits regularly, and they made it a norm for the family to have fruits on a daily basis. Because of the behavior, I have developed a craving for fruits, thus leading to my daily consumption. The behavior can be explained by the Allport’s Trait Theory, which states that an individual becomes unique due to the influence of various factors including a habit.
The factors entail the thoughts and intellectual capacities that one acquires. An example is my responses to emotional distress that resemble my mother’s trait. Since my childhood, I have grown knowing that writing can be a significant form of expressing oneself. I learned the behavior from my mother who used to write numerous poems to express her feeling. My closeness to her made me adopt the behavior, to the extent of writing becoming a part of my life. In most situations, I often note my ideas in a diary or create poems. The above psychological development can be explained by Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory. The theory explains the process of the development of behavior that starts through learning, with the gradual process leading to the development of an independent individual. My closeness to my mother initiated my interest in writing, and it gradually became part of me. Another psychological aspect is that I have a curious personality. Due to the personality, I have developed a habit of solving puzzles when I am free. I am fond of solving puzzles and watching documentaries with the aim of unearthing mystery issues.
Various social factors have shaped some of my personality traits. An example is my community’s insistence on fitness. People around me, including my neighbors, view individuals with excessive weight negatively. For this reason, being fit and slim is associated with confidence and acceptance. I learned the value at an early age, and as a result, I have formed a habit of performing regular exercises. I also ensure that I take a balanced diet. Another social factor is the value of friendships and relationships. As I was growing up, friendship was an important aspect, and every child craved to have company. As a result, I learned to associate with the different members of the community. As I grew up and interacted with the wider society, I had already developed the behavior of making friends. For this reason, I tend to make friends very easily in new environments. I also tend to favor going out during my free time instead of remaining indoors. According to the above personality, I fit into the extrovert category of Eysenck’s Personality Theory. The theory explains that an extrovert favor going out and being hyperactive. The traits may result in tiredness and boredom. When I get bored, I usually turn to writing and drawing. Another social impact is the development of my drawing skills due to my interactions with my teachers at an early age. The trait can be explained by the latency stage of Freud’s theory. The stage entails the realization of one’s identity and the mastery of skills. As a result of the relationship with the teachers, I have mastered the art of drawing.
One major influence that my culture has had is on competitiveness. I have grown in a community where people value individualism and individual success. Moreover, the culture has instilled a sense of independence in me. For this reason, I have developed a personality that yearns for individual success through competitiveness and excellence. For instance, I value my academic achievements highly, and I often find myself comparing with the best classmates with the aim of improving. Apart from winning, I have come to adopt the culture of relying on myself such that in the case of problems, I try to solve them first before asking for permission. As a result of the personality, I have developed a trait of valuing my personal achievements.
Erikson’s Stages of Life
Erik Erikson came up with psychological stages that portray the gradual development of individuals. My personality has undergone a gradual development process that relates to Erikson’s model. The initial stage is trust vs. mistrust that entails an infant developing a sense of security and safety depending on the care received. The infant then carries the sense of security even in the other relationships. I often find myself making new friends and establishing connections because I take a short time to form a sense of security. The second stage is autonomy vs. doubt which entails children attaining their sense of independence due to activities such as walking and playing with toys. My autonomous early age made me learn that I should seek assistance as a last resort. The third stage is initiative vs. guilt, and it entails children expressing themselves and initiating various activities. In my life, I often find myself initiating conversations even with strangers without a sense of fear. The fourth stage is competence vs. inferiority that entails a child gaining skills due to exposure to various aspects such as education. In my case, I gained skills such as drawing, and I have advanced it to competitive levels.
The next stage represents identity vs. role confusion that occurs during adolescence. Erikson explains that it is the stage when a child becomes independent and begins to think of the future. At this stage, my most significant development was my desire to have relationships with the opposite gender. I also started thinking about my future regarding my career aspirations. The next stage entails intimacy vs. isolation in which people explore their relationships through commitments. As a result, situations such as love develops. I believe that I am at this stage because I have started considering my personal relationships seriously to the extent of thinking of my future commitments. The last two stages of generativity vs. stagnation and ego integrity vs. despair entail the age group of over 40 years, meaning that I have not attained them.
In conclusion, the social, cultural, psychological, and biological forces have had an effect on my personal development. The factors have shaped my current personality that entails being an extrovert, fit oriented, and curious individual. My gradual personal development can be portrayed by following Erikson’s stages of personal developments that portray the behavioral changes since infancy. Currently, the factors have shaped a high percentage of my personality, but I believe that my current age allows for some more changes.
