Clinical Depression

Depression is an important health problem that affects anyone despite his or her age and practices. The condition is defined as a persistence change of mood typically in weak states that can last to over two weeks. The mood swings cause numbness and defocus to the individuals affected by their responsibilities. Depression has other effects such as appetite loss, impaired attention, disrupted sleep patterns, and low self-esteem. Prolonged depression causes medical disorder with more adverse effects such as madness and death. The increased depression rates in the world’s population have raised alarm into the clinical concern.

Therefore, clinical depression has become a critical subject in psychological studies. The study has focused on defining the behavioral science that contributes to the emergence of the condition. The behavioral practices include causes and symptoms of depression in various groups of people. Furthermore, the study has identified possible solutions and control measures of clinical depression.

Many people in the societies today suffer from clinical depression. The real causes of depression have not been fully identified, but several studies have tagged them with psychological events. Changes in emotions and mental instability have highly contributed to the cause of depression among many patients. Psychology has helped counselors and medics to explore the psychological factors such as human behavior and response to their problems. The study on these subjects has helped practitioners to understand, identify causes, symptoms, and suggest possible preventive measures to the condition.

There are different potential causes of clinical depression among people. Emotions and mood changes are caused by various factors. Some of the causes may be related to the environment, genetics, socialism, cultural, or organizational attributes. Genetic causes are passed from the bloodline through character and personal qualities. Several cases have occurred in families where suicidal cases have been reported over years. There is a high possibility that there exist high levels of depression characteristics amongst the people in the family. These chances are increased when individuals in the family are not outspoken or social. People who are poor in socialization do not get solutions to their problems and are more likely to be depressed. Adoption of unhealthy traits among family members increases risk chances among people.

Other factors that may contribute to the development of depression include environmental factors. There are certain environmental conditions that may cause depression such as grief and unfavorable conditions. They include excessive workload from a job, new events, and other significant events that need much concentration. Additionally, an illness can make the patient suffer from depression since it is caused by the change of situations and mood change. Emotional changes such worry, tiredness, and pressure are primary factors that contribute to the instability of environmental conditions leading to depression.

Socialism is an integral practice in communication, growth and development of an individual. Several studies have shown that people who are poor in socialization are at a higher risk of suffering from depression. Socialism offers a platform for problem-solving amongst friends and family. Several problems that people suffer from are not unique by nature because others are likely to have similar experiences in prior events. Therefore, people can get suggestions from others on how they solved their problems in earlier situations through socialization. A higher case of depression exists among young people due who have poor socialization habits. On the other hand, the people that a person associates with have an influence on the decisions that one makes through life. Staying with people who are poor in decision-making can affect one in making a poor one too because their advice is not credible. Hence, it will be wise to encourage people to surround themselves with individuals who are not too rational with their decision-making.

Other factors that will contribute to depression are the cultural and organizational norms that limit individual behavior. Unfavorable practices in a culture that restrict the productivity of a certain group of people may cause discomfort and cause pressure. The people in the community may be submitted to practices that limit their freedom and other crucial needs causing them to live in depression. Everyone in a community requires liberty and simultaneously focuses on observing the acceptable norms in the society they live. Doing the proper thing in controlled situations can cause the emergence of depression in a population. On the other hand, an organization that does not exercise its management freely without considering how people in the organization feel creates pressure among its employees. Unfavorable conditions for people in society give room for psychological instability existence.

Several theories of psychology have tried to explain the causes and symptoms of depression. However, these attributes range from one incidence to another and from an individual to another. The theories of psychology are behavioral, cognitive, humanism, and developmental. In this paper, the discussion will be based on the cognitive theory that states that human behavior is based on individual internal factors such as motivation, decision-making, attention, and thinking.

In order to research on psychological effects on the human behavior, students in a high school were studied. There was a change noted in the behavior of pupils as they graduated to higher classes in high school. The effect on the changes caused their performance to deteriorate, and this raised concerns. As a clinical counselor, I opted to study the students to identify the cause of their degradation in their performance. Most of the students were identified with depression that progressively developed to higher levels as they came closer to their terminal year in high school. The depression among these students was associated with fear, worry, and lack of motivation to face their final examinations and the world outside school. However, little or low attention was given to the problem and teachers never thought of depression as a possible factor. The people around the students, teachers, and parents, associated the poor performance with certain cases such as laziness, ignorance, and lack of determination of the students in their studies. The study identified that the student’s performance ranged from time to time and was progressively decreasing in value. After an open session with the students and use of different tactics to gather information, I was able to discover that depression was a common factor. An analysis of the student’s performance was an evidence of depression allegations in the school. The school programs had minimal motivational programs for the pupils.

In order to curb the existing problem and improve their performance, we introduced guidance, counseling and motivation programs in the school. The students were counseled and encourage on how to handle the current problems associated with their academic works. Within three months, an improvement in their performance and co-curriculum activities was noted.  Earlier on, the school culture had considered the extensive participation of students in co-curriculum activities as a waste of time. Therefore, the students were discouraged from pursuing any activities besides academic work. The culture had caused the most of the students to be anti-social. Some of the students would spend most of their time alone and be more conservative with the issues they faced. These faults were minimized after implementing the counseling programs in the school that encouraged more socialism and taught its importance to the population.

Dealing with teenagers is complicated because they are in the development stage. Some of them barely have a staunch ground to base their decisions and are easily influenced by any factors that surround them. There is an excellent record on the rates of the clinical depression cases among individuals in their adolescence and pre-adolescence stages. However, with proper attention, guidance, motivation, and knowledge empowerment the condition can be improved. After the positive progress with the techniques implemented in the school, further involvement of the students in such activities was encouraged. Pieces of training were undertaken, to teach parents and teachers on the importance of the activities and skills. The cognitive theory of psychology defines that individual internal influences, decisions, and knowledge is the key driver to the nature of their behavior. Therefore, control of the internal practices of the developing individuals will help nurture the way they handle their problems.

No matter the need to influence the behavior of a teenage population, it is almost impossible to help everyone. Not all the students lacked motivation, improper guidance in decision-making, and suffered from unfavorable environmental influences. Other factors may have been unidentified, and students should be keenly studied to know them. Therefore, further analysis of the pupils' behavior would be continued for a while. The study would be done in groups, individuals, in the general population. The purpose of the continued study is to help identify and suggest the possible solutions to the existing problems. The study would also provide a follow-up initiative to the programs implemented to measure their effectiveness. However, other adverse factors would influence the research. For example, some students would feel confined to some procedural programs that would limit their freedom. Therefore, this group of pupils would live under the pressure of being watched or analyzed.  The situation may lead to other forms of depression in the institution.

For the program to be harmonized and involve the students, the program would be set along the activities that they like. In psychology, it is easier to identify the real character and personality of a person only when they are at freedom. Therefore, the strategies that will be used to study people in the institution will be aimed at giving the population a chance to enjoy their freedom. Therefore, free and fair discussions will be done, the students would be given an opportunity to suggest their possible needs and conducive environments maintained. The psychology practitioners involved in the study will also be encouraged to build good relationships with the students. With the good relationship, the students will open up on the issues that distract them from focusing on their studies and solutions would be found. The approaches used will be aimed at the psychiatrists creating a good rapport with the students and creating more trust with their secrets and issues. The support provided and the motivation created will continue to help the students improve their academic performance and lower depression cases among them. Further, training will be extended to parents and teachers to help them understand the individual teenagers they handle and the way to help them through life. The study will help mold the decision making of the people involved and make their living healthier through the adoption of healthy psychological practices.

Despite the urge of finding solutions and study of the human behavior, it is important to observe ethics. Every individual lives in a society that has values and norms that should be observed. Most of these norms are formed based on humanism and religion, depending on what people term as right or wrong. Therefore, it is important to base the psychological solutions, teaching, and activities depending on the ethics of the society or organization.

A psychological study of human behavior that causes clinical depression in a population is important. Clinical depression lowers the productivity and lifespan of the affected people. Therefore, to reduce its adverse impact to people, it should be adopted in the management of populations and daily life situations. Application of the skills from the study of psychology in decision making and problem solving helps keep people in the right moods and increase their productivity.
