Book Analysis

Leadership is a complex task and requires determined individuals to carry out the task successfully. Leadership can refer to the individual leading an organization or a group of people. However, the ability of a person to lead a certain organization or a group can be described as leadership. Leadership requires one to establish a vision, share that vision with other people, offer relevant information, techniques to be able realizes the set vision. Moreover, in leadership one ought to ensure balance and coordinate any conflict among the members. Therefore, the study sheds light to analyze and compare two books; “The Leader in You” and “The Mentor Leader” to bring out the issue of leadership clearly to the readers.

In The Mentor Leader, Dungy believed that mentor leadership depicted to improve an individuals’ strengths. And it is critical especially through ways such as teaching to equip people with the necessary skills required to attain the vision of the organization. However, he also maintained that the successful mentor leaders often concentrate on bettering the people they lead to become better players either student, employees, or family members. Dungy also believed that mentor leadership can be learned but for it to be absorbed, it ought to be practiced. And as such, it can be transferred from one person to the other through teaching, the one being mentored by the mentor leader should be aware that the leader has a great concern for its success. And as such, it makes make the people led become receptive after realizing that we are concern about their development.

According to Dale Carnegie in “The Leader in You”, believed that one of the best ways to influence others to support you is through showing genuine interest in them. And he maintains that a good leader should demonstrate great concern and care for the interests of others. Ideally, a leader should act in a manner that attracts the people he or she leads, and this should be seen in doing things that need energy, time and thoughtfulness to others. Carnegie also emphasized the need for a leader to have the desire to listen to others. Because it is essential as a leader get to know the interests of the subordinates and what they would want from you as a leader.

The leaders should learn to listen to others and pay attention to what they are saying and this position a leader in a strategic place where he can influence the people and make them love you. However, Carnegie also explained that a leader should make sure that other people feel valued because the key principle in human nature is to get valued and appreciated. For example, leaders who appreciate the work of those that they lead develop a sense of friendship with the people a leader influences with. In an organizational setting, this value is paramount as it motivates the employees to work hard as the leadership recognizes their hard work hence improving the organizational performance.

Dungy in The Mentor Leader, explains that a leader should focus its attention on the significance. As a leader in sports, Dungy maintains that a leader should put first the goal of his organization before any other activity. For instance, he explains how he and other team player were focusing on the AFC Championship. Therefore, they were all committed to this common goal to win the championship but also improve the performance of all the players.

Importantly, to achieve this goal, every person had a role to perform in attaining the overall goal although they were all united for the common purpose. The success of the team was due to the desire to mentor each other to have a better team with their leaders being in a relational sense. Therefore, Dungy believes in the effort to attain a common purpose and that desire to make others better ought to begin at the top for an organization to realize its goals. The top leadership should show great concern to those in lower management level and support them so that they can realize their common purpose. Furthermore, leaders are expected to pool all the resources to the significant activity and train others to help in realizing their vision of the organization.

Carnegie in “The Leader in” You also explained the need for setting goals as a leader to make the organization and people have direction. He discovered goals as the key for a successful organization as people cannot work without a target. The goals should be shared among the team members and let every member has his or her view on the goals to have an informed decision-making. The leadership should also encourage the team to work towards their goal and praise any successful performance that will result in the realization of that goal.

Carnegie also explained the importance of the respect of opinions by a leader. He advised the leaders not to say, “You are wrong,”. Because it can demoralize the members and fail to give their valuable ideas that can be helpful in attaining the organizational goal. Carnegie advises leaders to avoid criticizing its subordinates whenever they do something they do not want. They should correct them in a polite manner that will not ruin their reputation or their friendship. The human resource is essential part in achieving any organizational goal and thus leaders ought to maximize it well and ensure that they feel appreciated in their work.

Markedly, Dungy also established another characteristic of a mentor leader that he should put people first in whatever he does. He explained that leaders who are shortsighted concentrate on the bottom line. Life is all about results, and thus leaders should strive their best to develop a mindset that focus on attaining the good results. However, he maintained that mentor leadership establishes a meaningful relationship with other people that enable them  to reach their goal. Dungy believe that the key to becoming an effective mentor leader is to put people first. The question that lingers in the minds of mentors is how they can make other people better in their lives. Leaders should ask themselves how people are prospering as a result of their leadership. Moreover, they should question themselves about the effect of their leadership and involvement in the lives of people. Ideally they should ask themselves whether their involvement in the life of the people has a positive impact or not.  The issue of involvement, improvement and influence are some of the key principles of a mentor leader.  Therefore, the desire to align our motives with good deeds for the people around us help us remain focused on positive influence. Dungy claims that leadership is about the influence and all leaders should strive to have an influence on the people around them.

On the other hand, Carnegie discloses that keeping in mind the end goal to inspire individuals to do what you need, you need to give them something that they think they need. As a similitude, Carnegie asserts that when you go angling, you need the fish to nibble the snare; they cannot do that unless there are worms on the snare. To snare individuals, you have to think similarly. Therefore, it is critical to catch the trap to suit the fish. Carnegie gives a few illustrations where clashes were determined by the one party reframing the arrangement as a win-win for both sides included. It involves some idea that relate to what the other individual needs, which means to put your needs on interruption for a minute or two. Besides, individuals will frequently be willing to assist you when you request it in a roundabout way by encircling the arrangement into a win for them. For instance, a worker may land a position needed by putting accentuation on the advantages to the organization worried of its vocation, and by making light of his requirement for an occupation.

A leader should try to maximize the performance of the team, and Dungy views this as a critical aspect of success in any organization. The performance of the team reflects the kind of the leadership a certain organization has. He explains how their success in the Championship aggravated the need for the leaders to ensure that the team is well managed and improved. The leaders used to coordinate the team and provide enough facilities and coaching to the team for outstanding performance. The team leadership worked towards improving every player as this would lead to their success. Dungy reveals that the leadership of their team intensified the desire to make everyone better as a well-skilled team is likely to have remarkable performance. Therefore, mentor leaders are grounded people who are not driven by their personal interests but that of the whole team. It became the reason their team managed to win the championship.

In The Leader in You, Carnegie advised leaders to give honest appreciation to the people they lead. Carnegie then gives a few samples, where a very much timed compliment or an earnest state of mind of appreciation towards somebody impacted their conduct. He asserts that everybody needs to feel essential, and after that gives a few cases where the conduct of a person turned out to be more subservient in fact they felt imperative. Moreover, he gives a case of a poor test given to a person by his wife that was illuminated by a short startling valuation for her. He also gives a sample of a lethargic representative who in the end became dedicated through the utilization of key praise.  He additionally gives illustrations of a few well-known agents whose primary capacity was rousing individuals to be happily working long hard slave-like hours for the purpose of the organization.

Lessons from the Readings

The two readings have provided a clear insight to me especially in the area of leadership as they explain how a leader should be. First, one learns that a leader should try to improve the strength of the people. I believe this is a good strategy that one can incorporate to have a team that performs. It entails things such as to improve individual knowledge and skills through coaching.

Furthermore, an organization that has this type of leadership attain their set goals as the team is all around outfitted with the important abilities to do the errand properly. The other thing one can incorporate in leadership is to show interest in what others do so that you can influence them to do what you want. It establishes a friendly environment with the people around you, and they will be free to share with you valuable ideas. People are the key to success in the organization, and as such a leader should seek the support of the people through respect and listen to them.

When people realize a leader is down to them, they will support its leadership to achieve the mission of the organization. The effective leadership put people first, and I think this is crucial because a leader cannot lead alone, there must be people below its leadership. To improve leadership, one should appreciate the people under leadership and praise them for their achievement as a way to motivate them to work jointly towards attaining the target. For a leader to influence people, one should give them what you think they need so that they can comply with your request. There is no way a leader can be effective in his leadership without meeting the needs of those he lead. Lastly, to invest in team performance is a critical aspect of a successful leader. The leader ought to improve the performance of every player to complete the task in the speculated time and successful.

Conclusion

The two readings by Carnegie and Dungy have provided enough details on leadership and serves as a guide to the modern leaders to incorporate those characteristics to have good leadership. However, the readings show how a leader is shaped by those around him or her and thus for a leader to be successful need to be supported by other people. The issue of leadership involves many things that all determine successful and failed leadership. For example, mentor leadership strives to build and improve the team to be able to achieve positive results. However, leaders ought to learn to respect and listen to the people around them so as to ensure they have a positive influence. Leadership style can manage the viability of the pioneer. A mentor pioneer is not self-absorbed, but rather a keener on creating and developing the general population it drives so that upon growth those individuals will later lead others that conceptualized new pioneers.

Provide that a leader must listen to a parcel. Ideally a leader must work to comprehend the needs and cravings of others. Moreover, a decent pioneer asks numerous inquiries, considers all choices, and leads to the right bearing. One would find the above qualities useful especially to improve a leadership style as they give a well-detailed explanation for what it takes for one to become a successful leader. Leadership is essential as we cannot live without leaders, who are made to provide guidance, direction, and advice on what we do in our daily activities.
